Mycoworks
Natural history and ecology:
Reishi™ is a fungal-based non-animal leather created by the California-based company, Mycoworks. This lab-grown material uses a patented process called Fine Mycelium™ which involves growing fungal hyphae—branching tubular fungal body filaments— into an underlying textile and fine-tuning them for strength, durability, thickness, texture, drape, and other performance features. Hyphae are the main mode of vegetative growth in fungi.
What makes this so special:
Unlike other mushroom leathers which are typically made of compressed mycelia, Reishi™ is custom-grown for fullness and specific performance standards in special trays under precise conditions where each sheet has a unique code tailored to growing conditions. Celebrities such as Natalie Portman and John Legend have invested in the company and the material has already been adopted by such major fashion houses as Hermès.
