FABRIC: RECYCLED T-SHIRTS

Regions: Guatemala

Fabric Name:
Hand-hooked rug made from recycled t-shirts

Origin:
Recycled t-shirts from “paca” clothing bales

Who made our fabric:
Handmade by Irma Elizabeth de León Sazo of Multicolores. Guatemala, Sololá department, Patanatic

Natural history and ecology:
This rug is crafted from recycled t-shirts, sourced locally at secondhand clothing stores known as 'paca' stores, named after the bales in which clothing is shipped to Guatemala from the U.S. Depending on the size of the rug, each piece contains fabric from 20 to 125 different secondhand garments. In 2020 Multicolores’ rug hooking artists recycled a total of 6,626 garments otherwise destined for the landfill.

What makes this so special: Deciphering the artist's use of lines, geometric shapes, natural objects and figures reveals stories, myths and ancient Mayan rituals. Each of these unique designs reflects the artist's interpretation of her Mayan heritage, ancestry and community traditions.

“I am happy that we find new uses for secondhand clothing rather than throwing it away. I enjoy setting this example for my family.” - Artist Glendy Muj

Artists like Irma Elizabeth de León Sazo- who made our piece - typically pay 1 quetzal per garment, about US$0.15 from local “paca” stores.

Paca is a complicated issue in Guatemala— on one hand, it’s an affordable source of clothing for many people. On the other hand, the proliferation of Western clothing spilling out of pacas competes with Guatemalan made clothing and handwoven indumentaria maya.
