FABRIC: WOVEN RAFFIA

Regions: Democratic Republic of the Congo

Fabric Name:
Raffia, Kuba cloth

Origin:
Raphia sp.

Who made our fabric:
Maker once known, sourced in Uganda in 2006. Made in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Natural history and ecology:
Kuba cloths traditionally use only locally sourced materials for their cloth. Fresh, green raffia leaves are gathered from the tops of the palm trees, not over harvesting so the plant continues to thrive.

What makes this so special: Kuba cloth has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. It originated in a culture rich in the arts, from poetry to carving, to costumes. Unfortunately today, the designs have been appropriated by designers and companies without acknowledging this rich history and unique use of indigenous fibers.

This fabric is made using a unique 45 degree tension loom. Full length raffia leaves are stripped, woven, then hand embroidered with dyed raffia.
