Natural history and ecology:
The leaves used in this process are a by-rpoduct of fruit cultivation and considered agricultural waste. The plants will regrow in the same place and do not require any additional land, water, or fertilizer to grow. The low water requirement, and the absence of chemicals and genetically modified crops ensure the sustainability of farmers’ livelihoods and the general health of the local ecosystems.
What makes this so special: Practiced in a few remaining places in the Philippines, the weaving of pineapple fiber creates a lightweight, lustrous, sheer cloth that has been a part of the cultural fabric of the Philippines for centuries.
