What makes this so special: Textiles generate 21 billion pounds of waste that goes into landfills every year, and FABSCRAP works to divert that waste - either by downcycling or giving the fabric new life.

New York-based nonprofit FABSCRAP is a convenient and transparent recycling and reuse service. It offers affordable and accessible material resources. The non-profit collects, organizes, and repurposes textile scraps from the city’s design offices, to divert as much unused material as possible from being landfilled or incinerated. The company works with fashion brands like Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, and Lafayette148, in addition to interior design and entertainment industries.

“FABSCRAP endeavors to end commercial textile “waste” and maximize the value of unused fabric.”

“When I saw all the waste that was accumulating from that design process and how much personally I was adding to the waste, it really made me ask myself, what is my contribution to society?”

— Camille Tagle/FABSCRAP

Camille Tagle

Camille Tagle, Co-founder and Creative Director of FABSCRAP, is a pioneer in recycling and reusing discarded fabric, both pre-consumer and post-consumer. FABSCRAP picks up, sorts, and creates new items from unwanted fabric. Many fabrics that end up in landfills are perfectly usable, and FABSCRAP is the only non-profit to use pre-consumer fabrics -- those that were generated and wasted during the production and creation of products in the commercial textile world. Camille’s background in design gives her a first-hand view of the fashion industry’s waste. She decided to turn the misuse of fabric into a brand that works to directly change the path of neglected materials. So far FABSCRAP has redirected nearly 1.4 million pounds of textiles from entering landfills. With volunteers helping sort fabrics by hand and also offering services in their educational objectives, this small dynamic team has large aspirations. Camille and her team at FABSCRAP are leading the next generation in never-been-done-before recycling efforts.
