Natural history and ecology:
Cotton cultivation in Laos continues to be based on small-scale farming and cottage industries. Farmers have found ways to adapt their farming cycles to rainfall conditions in each region. The Phou Tai women grow indigo alongside cotton, alternating rows of each to create a fertile growing environment for other vegetables, eliminating the need for fertilizers.

What makes this so special:

Each part of the cloth, from the raw materials to the color is local. Women have their own recipes for the indigo they grow, taking care of it to keep it alive for moths to use for dyeing.
